Communications Department

2023 Highlights

The Covenant Communications department supports Covenant’s ministries by providing strategy, messaging, and collateral for a diverse catalog of revolving initiatives. We prioritize precise communications through the use of targeted demographics, careful timing, and strategic channels. In 2023, we managed over 100 unique messaging initiatives and created over 1,000 unique deliverables for the ministries we serve. Here are a few examples of the work we served up in 2023.

Lent

Lent Sermon Series
& Pentecost

The art direction for Lent went through many different iterations of before we reached the final product. We wanted to create a line illustration that was an abstract representation the season of Lent that revealed more of its meaning and hidden elements the longer the viewer looked at the art. The dove in the cross represents Christ and the promise of hope, situated at the foot of a radiating cross. The archway that surrounds the design can also be taken to represent the empty tomb, while the three stair treads represent the journey of the season, as well as being a number associated with the Holy Trinity. Color also played an important role in this design, with the color purple being heavily associated with the Lenten season. We also liked the idea of continuing the art direction into the Pentecost design to show how interconnected the two are, with slight adjustments to the design and coloring to be more fitting for the day.

Unlocking Joy

Capital Campaign
Sermon Series

The goal of the Unlocking Joy campaign art was to create something clean, multigenerational, and something that reflected Covenant’s brand aesthetic. The art direction also needed to be flexible enough to translate well across multiple forms of print and digital media, so we relied heavily on the architectural renderings and Covenant branding. We also liked the idea of having a identifiable logo for the project that had a hand-drawn feel to add a personal element to the campaign.

Rekindle

Sermon Series

The Rekindle sermon series was based on the text in Acts 2 describing the first Pentecost. We overlaid close-up images of flames on top of an etching done by German artist, Augustin Hirschvogel, in 1548, titled “The Descent of the Holy Spirit” that depicts the imagery in Acts 2 of the Holy Spirit appearing to Jesus’ disciples during Pentecost. The energetic and vibrant feel of the design tied into the sermon series being the tied to Fall Kick-Off, a time of re-engagement in the Church.

I Am

Sermon Series

The I Am sermon series was focused on Jesus’s declarations of who He is in the book of John. We decided on using the sheep for a few reasons – sheep and shepherds were strong images in the passages that were preached on (I Am the Gate for the Sheep, I am the Good Shepherd) and the “lamb” is also a symbol commonly associated with Jesus.

Illuminate

Advent Sermon Series

For the 2023 Advent sermon series, Illuminate, we wanted the design to be centered around the idea of circles and rings of light. We liked the concept of showing a glowing effect emanating from a central point, the manger. Our goal was to create something that conveyed the stillness and quietness of Jesus being born in humble surroundings, but the immense impact of the action, with the rings of illumination casting out the darkness.

Events & Initiatives

When designing for initiatives and events for Covenant’s multiple ministries, several factors come into play in the design process — who is the intended audience, how wide reaching is this event/initiative, do we intend to reuse these designs in the future, among other factors. We have put together a sampling of some of our favorite designs for events from 2023.
