Did you know Covenant is a satellite campus for Manos de Cristo educational classes? Five years ago, we started with one English as a Second Language (ESL) class of five students and two teachers that met twice a week. This year we have three English classes with about 30 students; and three morning classes (Levels Intro, 1 and 2) and one evening class (Level 3). Our classes meet Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30 - 11:45 a.m., and Tuesday/Thursday 7 to 9 p.m.
Would you consider being a teacher or assistant for one our English classes? It's a wonderful opportunity to work together, meet our new neighbors here in Austin and help them adjust to their new life in our community! Our students come from all over the world: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar. Most of our students in the morning classes are referred from Refugee Services.
COMMON QUESTION: I have never taught ESL or anything else, can I do this?
The short answer is YES!
The class uses a very complete teacher guide that includes lesson plans, CDs, student materials and dialogs. The lesson plans feature common daily activities to guide each unit, such as making a grocery list, going to the grocery store, planning meals, following a recipe, going to the doctor, buying a car, using public transportation and looking for an apartment.
Another teacher will be with you! We team teach and most of our teachers have attended training conferences offered by English Forward and online training is available. We like to have two or three teachers in a classroom to divide into groups for conversation time and to assist students who may need one on one help. Most people start assisting in the classroom for a few weeks or months before planning and teaching a lesson. For more information, contact Cheryl Banks, (512) 789-2696
