Mission Spotlight

AUGUST SPOTLIGHT:
Opportunities to Welcome the Stranger

Scripture points us to the call to Welcome the Stranger. Matthew 25: 31-40. “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” This month we have lots of ways and opportunities for our congregation to learn how Covenant is participating in the call and how you can get involved!

WAYS TO GET INVOLOVED

COVENANT HOSTS VACCINE CLINIC FOR HOMELESS

On Saturday August 28th, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Covenant will host Mission Partner, Helping Our Neighbors (HON). HON will welcome homeless neighbors connected to their ministry to have a shower, clean clothes, a warm meal and an opportunity to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as provided by Austin Public Health. We will need many volunteers to help with this event that will take place in Eaton Hall. If you are interested in helping, please contact Whitney Bell.

ESL CLASSES (English as a second language)

Covenant serves as a satellite campus for Manos De Cristo-a local non profit supporting families in need. This fall, Covenant will be hosting and teaching 4 classes:
•  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 -11:45 a.m. (childcare available) and
•  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 - 9 p.m. (no childcare available).

We are looking for teachers to help with these wonderful classes. No experience necessary. We pair all new teachers with seasoned teachers to learn as you go. ESL is an amazing way to care for our neighbors and help those new to the USA navigate Austin and know they are loved and cared for by a local church. For more information, please email Cheryl Banks.

COVENANT REFUGEE MINISTRY

The Covenant Refugee team has been welcoming new families since 2014. In partnership with Refugee Services of Texas, this team has welcomed families as they have landed at ABIA and helped to get them settled into their homes, learn how to get around town, get kiddos settled into schools and along the way, created deep and beautiful relationships. As our country begins to open up to more refugees, our team’s needs will grow. If you feel called to care for refugees and want to be a part of this team, please reach out to Emily Dove.

VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES

Another wonderful opportunity to care for those who are new and learning English is by participating with mission partner Ladies Let’s Talk. LLT is an online class that pairs english learners with native speakers to practice english and work on skills needed for living in the USA. LLT classes are online and take place monthly. If you would like to participate in LLT, please reach out to Maria Raper.
